The Social Media Showdown is kicking off today with the Humans of Media - a Humans of New York-style photo competition.
While it may not be as poetic as the tales of life from a New York street corner, working in a media agency provides much fodder for storytelling.
Now's your chance to put fingers to keys, digits to screens and show what it's really like working in the media biz, and trust us it's worth your while, because Facebook is flying the winner to silicon valley and then you'll have some stories to tell.
Post your pictures and share your short story that tells a tale about your time in agency life.
To enter your story, snap a picture and upload it to www.socialmediashowdown.com.au with a brief story. All stories will be published within the hour on the official Humans of Media Facebook and Instagram pages. And that’s when the real competition begins.
Enter the Social Media Showdown here: www.socialmediashowdown.com.au.
Tomorrow we'll have the first league table showing which agencies and individuals have made a strong start.
Here's Wayne Bishop, former MEC Australia and now MD of PHD South Africa's Humans of Media story
"I loved my first senior job at a media agency. I was promoted to Strategy Director and suddenly had that I’m-not-sure-what-I’m-doing-but-this-is-the-shit feeling. It lasted the full five years as I worked across one of the biggest multinationals in the world. We also had a great team even though it honestly felt like it was assembled using a blindfold and a dartboard. We used to play media Balderdash at client meetings. Everyone had to choose a made-up word and assign a meaning to it. You got one point for every time you mentioned it in your presentation and you got ten points if the client repeated the word back to you. It was innocent pisstaking. And it was also a great lesson in persuasion. It was brilliant. I wouldn’t trade that time in my life for anything."
The Social media Showdown is being launched by Social Soup in partnership with AdNews and Facebook, which is providing a trip to Silicon Valley for the winner. It will find out which people and agencies are the slickest at social through weeklong series of activations. There's points up for grabs for each social task that will put players into a league table to battle it out for the top spots – both individually – and for their agency. The more you participate and the more social shares you get – the more points.
All the details of the daily initiative, how to enter and participate will be on AdNews every day next week. Each day, we'll also update the league table to see which individuals and agencies are in the lead before announcing the final scores. There's prizes throughout the week from a smartwatch to trip to Silicon Valley courtesy of Facebook and Instagram, for the overall winner.
Social Soup head of digital and new business Thomas Lyngsfeldt, said: “We know media agencies have a challenge with limited young talent applying for jobs in the industry. The primary reason for this is the low awareness level of media agencies and what they do. Social Soup is aiming to rectify this by asking people to tell real stories about working at media agencies and share them with their friends. We’ll will also promote the best story to over 1 million people in the young audience People 16-25 to raise the awareness.”
Here's all the social tags you need for the week long series of events.
