Shazam to become ad-free following Apple acquisition

By McKenna Uhde | 25 September 2018

Apple's $400m purchase of Shazam was finalised today with the company's first move being to make the platform ad-free for every user.

The deal comes three weeks after the EU gave the go-ahead for Apple to make public its intentions for buying the app, but it is not yet clear how Apple plans to integrate the app into its offering long term.

The music-identifying application reportedly earned $54 million in revenues its 2016 fiscal year, drawing the attention of other music providers such as Spotify and Snap, both of which also looked into purchasing the brand.

Shazam and Apple have a long-standing history, with Shazam being one of the first apps made available by the App Store.
