Seven West Media has filed court proceedings in the Federal Court against Cricket Australia.

The media group says the action is in relation to "multiple quality and standard breaches" of Seven’s media rights agreement by Cricket Australia (MRA).

The proceedings seek a court declaration that Seven is entitled to terminate the agreement on the basis of material contract breaches.

Seven will also seek damages.

The network previously obtained preliminary discovery proceedings in the Federal Court relating to the claims.

Cricket broadcasts will continue while the dispute is argued in court. Seven: "“Seven will continue to perform its obligations ... (in terms of telecasting Tests and BBL etc) until terminated."

The network says it informal dispute resolution procedures under the agreement failed to resolve the dispute.

The media group has been unhappy with the quality of cricket available for its free-to-air broadcast and had argued it shouldn’t be paying as much for the rights.

Seven West and Fox Sports, majority owned by News Corp, have a six-year, $1.18 billion broadcast rights deal, which started in 2018.
