Southern Cross Austereo (SCA) is “quietly confident” following the first day of its new Sydney breakfast show, Dan and Maz, with head of content Craig Bruce saying “it sounded like it's been on air forever.”

The duo, who hosted a national drive show on the newly re-branded Today's Hit Network in 2014, had their first day as breakfast hosts on Sydney's Today's Hit station yesterday. Bruce has said previously that he expected the show “to sound good from day one” and confirmed to AdNews that his expectations were met.

“When you hear Dan and Maz you hear exactly what the Today's Hit FM Network is about in 2015,” Bruce said.

“The tone and feel is exactly what we're trying to replicate from a station perspective. We're quietly confident we're going to have a much better year this year.”

Bruce said all good breakfast shows take time to build and refine, but said any changes made to the format for Dan and Maz's show will be minimal.

“Tweaking is probably not even the word - my first impression of the show is that it sounded like their drive show, but on breakfast and that's what we're hoping for,” Bruce said.

“There will be some elements that we add to the show and some new features, but at the heart of it the combination is seven years in the making and we don’t plan on making any major changes and adjustments to what we've heard so far.”

SCA is also banking on Dan and Maz to grow its audience in drive. While the station had previously announced that Jules Lund would be holding the national drive spot until Hamish and Andy took it permanently in the second half of the year, Dan and Maz will now be retaining the position in all stations except Sydney, where it will be a music-based slot. Lund will have his own national show from 6-7pm weekdays, joined by an as-yet-unnamed co-host.

“Dan and Maz as a brand and a national property is one of our strongest now and there are audiences right around the country that love the show,” Bruce said.

“We think that it's our best short term option to continue with that from a consistency perspective.”
