SBS nudges out the ABC as the most trusted news brand

SBS has come out on top of news brands when it comes to trust, according to the latest Digital News Report: Australia, by the University of Canberra’s News and Media Research Centre.

Trust in all of the news brands included in this survey fell between 1 to 3 percentage points from last year’s survey (see figure 6.21).

However, the public broadcasters continue to be the most highly trusted news brands.

However the SBS (65%) has just overtaken the ABC (64%) as the most trusted news outlet with the ABC falling 2 percentage points from 2023.

"This report is a strong validation of the work our teams do across all news platforms to provide accurate, impartial and trustworthy news and information to all Australians," said SBS news director Mandi Wicks.

“With more people consuming their news through social media platforms, the presence of trusted brands in that space is more crucial than ever.”

This year, participants were asked how difficult it is for them to identify untrustworthy information on different digital platforms. Among users, TikTok (34%) and X (32%) deemed the most difficult for participants to tell apart trustworthy and untrustworthy information.

In contrast, 56% of Google search users, 52% of YouTube users and 52% of Facebook users say it is easy to identify trustworthy information on those platforms.
