Richard McGowan, a crime reporter turned advertising industry communicator, is calling it a day.

McGowan, who currently looks after the public face of IPG Mediabrands, is retiring later this year.

CEO Mark Coad: "Richard has excelled in a long career in corporate communications and journalism. He has been our media relations and corporate communications consultant for almost 20 years and his work even predates the formation of Mediabrands.

"It is no coincidence that Mediabrands and our people enjoy great reputations in this market. Richard has worked extremely hard at building relationships."

McGowan is a former head of global communications at Young & Rubicam, based in New York for six years.

Before that he was in London for 11 years in senior corporate communications roles and as international editor of Campaign.

His career started with a cadetship at a small NSW country-town newspaper and later he was a crime and sports reporter for News Corp.

Coad: "This is a wonderful industry, and increasingly a young person’s industry. To see somebody of Richard’s capability excel for so long – and then call time on his own terms fills me with joy, envy, pride and gratitude. All in equal measure. It is a massive testament to his skills, his character and his legacy."
