Omnicom is reportedly in advanced talks to acquire Interpublic Group (IPG) in a deal which would create the world’s latest advertising group.

The Wall Street Journal, reporting “people familiar with the matter,” said a transaction between the two US-based companies could be announced as early as this week

“The exact terms of the deal being discussed couldn’t be learned,” said the WSJ.

Omnicom, the world's third largest player, and IPG, the fourth, together would have revenue of about $US20 billion, ahead of the current largest player, UK-based WPP with $US15.1 billion.

The Financial Times (FT) reported the deal would be worth more than $30 billion.

"The all-stock deal is structured as a takeover of Interpublic by its larger rival Omnicom," said the FT.

"One person familiar with the situation said that talks had started in the summer. He added the deal could be announced as early as Monday."

A report via financial blog Betaville last week that France-based Publicis Groupe, which has the biggest market capitalisation, was preparing a bid for IPG was dismissed.
