McDonald’s has taken a brave stance towards equality, releasing a gay-friendly ad in Taiwan, a country where gay marriage is still illegal.

In the touching ad for McDonald’s Taiwan, a young man comes out as a gay to his father inside the fast-food restaurant by writing on his coffee cup that he likes boys.

His father then pounds his fist on the table and storms off, leaving his son devastated. When his dad returns, he picks up his boy’s drink and scrawls “I accept that you like boys,” over the original message. Both are choking back tears.

The clip has had an overwhelmingly positive reaction, with the original video already being viewed 1.5 million times.

Although not everyone is lovin’ the clip. The Alliance of Taiwan Religious Groups for the Protection of Family secretary general, Chang Shou-yi, is trying to boycott the ad, saying it is “polluting young minds”.

In a statement to the press Shou-yi says he does not approve of the ideological stance behind the advertisement because McDonald’s is frequented by many children and people must oppose the promotion of same-sex behaviour.

Previously McDonald’s has been at the forefront of gay-friendly marketing in several countries, having aired a similar French spot in 2010.
