TikTok’s latest quarterly Community Guidelines Enforcement Report revealed that 5,485,827 ads were removed from the platform from January to March 2022, a sharp increase from the previous quarterly results that saw 3,181,858 ads removed from October to December 2021.
Advertiser accounts and ad content are held to strict policies and must follow TikTok’s community guidelines, advertising guidelines and terms of service, to protect users from fake, fraudulent, or misleading content, including ads.
TikTok stated that the greater increase of ad removal is due to a change in the company’s approach to ad violation enforcement and a strengthening of its account-level enforcement capabilities.
"Previously, when an account was found to be in violation of our policies, all ad traffic associated with that account was blocked," said the company in the report.
With the change, TikTok is now able to remove all ads associated with these accounts from its internal systems, using a combination of innovative technology and people to identify, review, and action content that violates the company’s policies.
"While the end-result is the same for our viewers, TikTok believe this improves the ads ecosystem and reinforces our commitment to creating a safe and positive environment for our users."
TikTok also removed almost 45 million accounts, more than triple as many fake profiles as the previous quarter, with fake accounts and accounts suspected to be under the age of 13 the top two reasons for the removals.
