Peter Tonagh, a former CEO of Foxtel and News Corp Australia and more recently deputy chair of the ABC, is joining the board of directors of Nine Entertainment.

He is currently chair of Quantium, a data and analytics company, as well as GTN Limited, Bus Stop Films and Honey Insurance.

During his time at News Corp, he was a director of REA Group Limited where he also acted as interim CEO for six months.

Nine Chair Catherine West said she was  delighted to have someone of his calibre and experience join the board.

"With his extensive career in media, and in data and digital businesses, I am confident Peter will prove a valuable addition to the Nine Board, not only for Nine’s contemporary business but also for our strategic aspirations for the future,” she said.

Tonagh said he was passionate about the media and its critical role in a democratic Australia - about the future of journalism, the opportunities of video and the further potential of digital marketplaces.

“I am excited about Nine’s leading position in the industry - about the powerful suite of assets it controls, and the opportunities for those assets to further evolve and work effectively together.

“I look forward to working with the board and management to ensure shareholders benefit from the ongoing strength of Nine’s position.”

Nine, like other Australian media companies, has been keeping a tight grip on costs as it battles a subdued advertising market.

The company reported a 31% fall to $134.9 million in net profit after tax for the year to June in a challenging market. Revenue was down 3% to $2.6 billion.

Total TV revenue fell 10% to $1.13 billion over the full year, impacted by a "weak" advertising market.

Mike Sneesby stepped down as chief executive officer, with chief finance and strategy officer Matt Stanton as acting chief executive.
