Optus is offering next season's English Premier League content package for free to any customer who signs up to selected plans and subscribes by 31 July 2016. Previously it was charging $15 for customers who were not on plans worth at least $85 per month.
Premier League subscriptions go on sale today and are available on a range of post-paid, SIM-only, mobile broadband, and home broadband plans. The cheapest Optus mobile plan starts at $30 per month for a year.
The sweetener will be viewed as a goodwill gesture by the telco after a fan backlash when the pricing packages were first released.
At the time, AdNews said the telco should have offered access of the first season to non-customers because many on rival networks will not be able to break their contracts without considerable cost.
In response to Optus' EPL play, Foxtel greatly increased its football content offering by adding EPL club channels for the major teams that will show delayed game coverage for the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United. It has also added BeIN Sports channels that cover all of the other major European leagues.
Ben White, managing director of marketing and product at Optus, said: “Today, we’re shaking up the market even more by offering our customers more of the content they love. From data free prepaid music streaming, to the Premier League, Optus is changing people’s expectations of their telco provider.”
