Nine says Olympics will make a profit

Nine Entertainment still has ad spots available for the Paris Olympics but will make a profit on the coverage, according to the media group..

Major advertisers for the Olympics Nine coverage include Toyota, Woolworths, Harvey Norman and NRMA Insurance.

“We’ve now written $135 million of revenue across the Olympic and Paralympic Games. From a revenue point of view, that now guarantees that Nine will be profitable on the Paris Olympic and Paralympic Games,” said Nine CEO Mike Sneesby.

The Australian reported Nine Entertainment was looking at a potential $60 million loss from the Olympics broadcast.

Sources told The Australian that Nine’s total Games costs of at least $120 million, including about $100 million on its broadcast deal with the International Olympic Committee.

However, Sneesby, in an interview with the Australian Financial Review, said the games were in profit, taking into account all costs including production and rights acquisition.

And improved technology meant more could be done with less with the game starting July 26.

When Nine last broadcast the Olympics, in 2012 in London, the network had 254 people for 300 hours of live content.

For Paris, Nine will be taking 123 to cover broadcast production, for 5000 hours of programming.
