Nine Entertainment is withdrawing from printing its newspaper in Tasmania, following sharp rises in newsprint costs.

Region publishners previously warned of "news deserts" when newsprint cost jumped by as much as 80%.

Nine had been printing the AFR and The Age at ACM's facilities in Tasmania, where Australia's last newsprint mill is located

James Chessell, Nine’s managing director of publishing: "It's not a decision we have taken lightly but the rising cost of paper means it is uneconomic to print in Tasmania.

"We will continue to focus on our many Tasmanian digital subscribers who are able to access the increasingly-popular digital version of 'today's paper."
