GroupM media agency Wavemaker has lost the local account for streaming company Netflix, AdNews can reveal.

The pitch was launched last year, the shortlist said to include Wavemaker, Initiative, Kaimera and S4's The Monks.

A source close to Netflix confirmed the incumbent agency Wavemaker no longer holds the account.

Insiders say the new agency appointment will be announced shortly.

WPP’s recent appointment with American e-commerce company Amazon, which owns streaming platform Prime Video, is speculated to have affected Netflix’s relationship.

In September, Amazon appointed Omnicom Media Group to run US and WPP to Europe and APAC, seeing the incumbent Initiative getting a piece running the Amazon Web Services, Amazon Ads and Amazon Business.

Yesterday Wavemaker announced it had poached two strategists from Initiative which worked on the Amazon account.

Wavemaker also holds the media contract for Paramount, which owns streaming platform Paramount+.

Netflix’s creative agencies are Akcelo and Jack Nimble.

The brand has done well-loved local campaigns such as Bridgerton in Bowral and Upside Down downunder emergency, both of which have been shortlisted for AdNews' Agency of the Year Awards two years running.

Netflix and Wavemaker gave no comment.
