Nearly five million tune in to Matildas' opening match win

The Matildas’ opening match against Ireland in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 reached 4.88 million people across the screens of the Seven Network.

The game, which saw the Matildas triumph over Ireland 1-0 in front of a sold-out crowd of 76,000 at Stadium Australia, attracted an average audience of 1.97 million and a national broadcast audience of 1.74 million viewers on Seven (including 1.23 million in the capital cities), plus another 196,000 viewers on 7plus.

The game peaked at 2.28 million viewers and dominated its broadcast timeslot, scoring a 47.6% commercial audience share in total people, 53.9% in 25 to 54s and 57.8% in 16 to 39s.  

Seven’s head of network sport and MD of Seven Melbourne, Lewis Martin, said the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 is off to a flying start on Seven and 7plus.

"It was fantastic to see the Matildas in action last night and their victory over Ireland was a great start to their campaign to claim the Cup," he said.

“The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 will be the biggest global sporting event of the year, the most-attended standalone women’s sporting event in history and a true celebration of women’s sport. We’re honoured to be bringing the key matches to all of Australia live and free.” 

From 20 July to 20 August, 15 key matches in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 – including the two opening day matches, two quarter-finals, both semi-finals and the final, plus every Matildas game – will be seen on Seven
