Movers & Shakers: QMS, PHD, Lution, McCann

It's hard to keep up with all the latest moves across media, marketing and advertising, so we've made a list. Check out the biggest moves in adland this week.

Chris Maxwell and Nick Garrett resurface
Founder of CUB’s in-house agency, Chris Maxwell, has launched Lution, a marketing, data and technology consultancy focused on helping brands to build and optimise in-house agencies. To launch Lution, Maxwell has teamed up with ex-CEO of Clemenger BBDO Nick Garrett, global CMO for Foster’s, Bacardi and Walgreens Boots Alliance Andy Gibson and founder of independent agency Present Company, Marty Wirth.

PHD's hiring spree
PHD has made four new hires across the content team. Former strategy director at Hello Social, Joshua Tan, joins PHD as social director. Tan brings with him a wealth of experience across FMCG, QSR, tech and airlines. Mia Kyrikos also joins as a social media manager. Her previous experience includes The Iconic and more than three years at Present Company Pty Ltd. Following PHD’s Melbourne office win of Priceline’s social media account, PHD Content welcomed Bryan Richardson and Allira Sher. Richardson joins as a social media manager with over four years’ experience client side at Myer. Sher joins the content team as a social media executive after an internal promotion.

McCann nabs Clems and Interbrand alumni
McCann has appointed creatives Josh Aitken and Willy Maitland as creative directors. Aitken joins McCann, part of Australian independent network Hero, from Clemenger BBDO and AMV BBDO London. He helped launch and run Clemenger’s social and content offering Flare. Maitland joins the team from AnalogFolk and Clemenger BBDO. He is also the youngest person to teach at AWARD school. Lucy Gavan joins as senior strategist. Gavan joins McCann Sydney, part of independent network, HERO, after five years at brand consultancy, Interbrand, building and reimagining the identities and experiences for many Australian iconic brands, including Telstra, Westpac, Federation Square and Sydney Opera House.

QMS hires ex-JCDecaux sales boss
Former JCDecaux national sales director (independent agencies) David Pullinger has been appointed to the newly created role of general manager, independent agencies and direct sales, at outdoor specialist QMS Media. He spent nearly a decade at APN Outdoor, where he was instrumental in driving significant revenue growth during a range of sales management roles, before moving to JCDecaux post the APN acquisition.

 

 

Boomtown names new marketing lead
Boomtown has appointed Lucia Elliott as its new marketing lead. Elliott brings more than 20 years’ experience as a marketer, and has spent the past seven years running her own marketing consultancy, Creighton Ward. In her new role at Boomtown, which was launched to boost advertising investment in regional media, Elliott is responsible for leading marketing as Boomtown seeks to change advertiser and agency perceptions of regional Australia. Elliot has also previously worked as a marketing director at NewsMediaWorks, helping launch the industry’s new measurement currency Enhanced Media Metrics Australia (emma). She has also worked in agencies including George Patterson Partners, Mojo, The Campaign Palace on blue chip brands including Coca-Cola, Unilever, Nestle and KFC.

Clems Melbourne promotes Georgia Jones
Clemenger BBDO Melbourne has promoted Georgia Jones to the newly created role of head of business management. Jones joined the agency as a group business director in 2018 and has worked across a number of key clients for the agency including Belong, BMW and NAB. Prior to joining Clemenger, she held senior roles in agencies and client-side in the UK and Australia, with a focus on business transformation, data-driven marketing and customer experience.

Seven West Media appoints Clare Gill
Seven West Media has appointed Clare Gill as head of regulatory and government affairs, effective February 1. Gill will be responsible for Government and regulatory affairs, corporate affairs, industry group representation, external stakeholder management and strategic input to business strategy. Gill’s appointment follows the departure of Justine McCarthy, who is moving to a new role as senior adviser to the Minister for Communications, Urban Infrastructure, Cities and the Arts, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP.

Kirsten Dunlaevy lands at The Royals
The Royals has appointed Kirsten Dunlaevy in the newly created role of head of business management Sydney to support its growing client list. In this role, Dunlaevy will lead relationships with key clients, and in partnership with the management team is tasked with driving the agency’s continued growth. Dunlaevy was most recently group director, client services and business development at R/GA Australia, where she spent just over four years. She has previously spent time at local independent digital shops and Moon Communications. Prior to arriving in Australia she worked in her hometown of New York City at agencies including DDB, FCB and Saatchi & Saatchi.

 

Broadsheet's Melissa Mason joins Are Media
Are Media has appointed Melissa Mason as editor (digital) of its heritage fashion brands ELLE and Marie Claire. With an extensive background in fashion, style and beauty, Mason has more than ten years print and digital experience, joining Are Media from Broadsheet Media where she was content director. She has also worked at Pedestrian Group as managing editor and senior style and features editor and was editor of News Corp’s Primped.com.au. For more than two years she worked at Pacific Magazines as features and beauty editor for Girlfriend and Total Girl and began her career at Bauer Media (now Are Media) where she was a beauty writer.

VCCP Sydney adds to creative and planning teams
VCCP has kicked off 2021 with fresh faces joining its creative and planning teams. Nathan Pashley and Heath Sims bolster the creative department. Creative team Pashley and Sims previously worked together at 72andSunny creating campaigns for the likes of Tooheys Extra Dry, Byron Bay Brewery, Google Nest, Amaysim and Kosciuszko beer. They will be working across a variety of VCCP clients including Compare the Market, Cadbury, LDV Australian Red Cross and Torrens University Australia. Tilly Treloar has joined the strategy department as a planner. Treloar began her career as graduate at Clemenger BBDO Sydney before settling into the agency's planning department where she worked on a range of clients. Treloar will be working across LDV, Cadbury, Torrens University and new business development at VCCP.

Alice Almeida goes TotallyAwesome
TotallyAwesome, a forum for kids and brands to safely interact via the internet, has engaged Sydney-based Alice Almeida to develop the business’s APAC data, research and insights portfolio. Almeida is a specialist with 20 years of media, brand and consumer experience across TV, digital, print and outdoor. Almeida's experience includes senior positions in Australian-based research including Channel Nine, Seven Network, News Corp and Fairfax Media. She is also a former manager of innovation and insights for online market intelligence business Hitwise. She has held representative roles in industry research and measurement organisations and presented research and insight projects at over 60 conferences across APAC.

 

Hulsbosch strengthens team
Independent branding and design agency Hulsbosch has appointed Marcel Wijnen as creative director. In his 30-year career, Wijnen has worked across countries in Europe and Asia where he gained experience as creative director at Interbrand London for two years and executive creative director at Interbrand Singapore for six years. Locally, he spent seven years with Blue Marlin as creative director and most recently four years at Marque Branding as creative director. He is the third hire in two months, with Ruth Chapman and Emma Sprouster also joining the team as senior designers at Hulsbosch.
