Ten's I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here Opening Night drew an audience of 1.44m last night, while the Welcome to the Jungle segment managed a further 1.35m.

The reality show, which sees 12 celebrities dropped into the jungle and compete in a variety of different challenges, was split into two segments, the 'Opening Night' and 'Welcome to the Jungle', with 1.09m and 1.01m metro viewers respectively.

Both segments achieved their highest ever commercial share among all key demos since the series commenced in 2015. The ratings also held in-line with 2017's premiere which drew in an overnight metro audience of 1.1m.

The show led to one of Ten's strongest overnight main channel performances in the last two months, taking a 20.8% share, followed by Seven with 18.4% and Nine with 14.9%.

"We really had to re-define the landscape for summer viewing this year and early indications show there is a market for first-run entertainment now most of the country is back at work,Network Ten chief content officer Beverley McGarvey said.

"We know it is early days but we have lots more twists and turns, fun and frightening challenges and a few brilliant surprises coming in the next few weeks.”

Gossip and entertainment 'guru' Richard Reid and former Tasmanian Senator Jacqui Lambie were the first to arrive in the South African location, while other contestants such as AFL legend Dermott Brereton, journalist Natasha Exelby, international model Justin Lacko, celebrity cook Justine Schofield, comedian Tahir Bilgiç and disgraced politician Sam Dastyari were all introduced to audiences.

Coming in behind I'm a Celeb in the prime time slot was Seven's coverage of the Big Bash League (BBL), with session two of the clash between the Melbourne Renegades and Brisbane Heat drawing in 476,000 viewers.

The first session of the evening game between Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers, which was the third and final BBL game of the day, drew in 463,000.
