Mi9 chief operating officer Marc Barnett is leaving the company over what is understood to be ongoing tension with the management regime at Nine Entertainment Co (NEC) and the direction it wants to take the online publisher.

NEC's top brass are said to be putting pressure on Mi9 to shift the focus away from that set under former CEO Mark Britt, who announced his departure in August to head Catcha Group's SVOD and IPTV interests across South East Asia.

Alex Parsons was appointed Britt's replacement although it is unclear yet who will replace Barnett.

Barnett is also chairman of the new joint venture between Fairfax Media and Nine Entertainment Co, for an online premium advertising exchange in which the two groups are combining millions of smartphone and tablet audiences, called APEX.

Barnett will most likely resign from his APEX role when his departure is announced.

Since Nine took full control of the former joint venture with Microsoft it has taken steps to integrate it with the broader Nine Entertainment business.
