Four of the biggest digital platforms are due to appear before a parliamentary inquiry into the influence of social media today.
Local representatives from Meta, Snap, TikTok and Google will give insight into how the companies operate in Australia and the impact they have.
The companies are expected to be grilled on everything from age limits to social networks, harmful and illegal content on digital platforms, as well as why Meta abandoned deals with local media outlets.
Elon Musk’s X is a notable absence, but the company has no Australian staff anymore.
The committee will also hear from publisher Private Media and billionaire Andrew Forrest’s investment company Tattarang.
In the first public hearing, last Friday, media bosses warned that local news coverage and newsroom jobs could shrink if the government fails to ensure Meta renews its agreement to pay for news content.
Seven, Nine and News Corp want social media companies forced to pay for news.
The committee is due to present an interim report to parliament by August 15 and a final report November 18.
