Meta has expanded fact checking to fight misinformation during the Voice to Parliament Referendum campaign.

Mia Garlick, director of public policy for Meta AUNZ, says the social media platform will be using a comprehensive strategy to combat misinformation, voter interference and other forms of abuse.

"Many Australians will use digital platforms to engage in advocacy, express their views, or participate in democratic debate. At Meta, we’re committed to playing our part to safeguard the integrity of the referendum," she says.

"Alongside our ongoing integrity measures we’ve implemented for previous elections, we’ll also roll out additional measures to promote safety and integrity across our platforms ahead of this year’s referendum."

Meta is expanding capacity for its third-party fact-checking program, via Australian Associated Press (AAP) and RMIT FactLab CrossCheck, by providing a one-off funding boost.

It is also partnering with mental health organisation ReachOut to offer further support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

The Voice to Parliament, a proposed Australian federal advisory body to represent the views of Indigenous communities, will be the subject of a referendum later this year.
