HuffPost Australia given launch date
The Huffington Post's Australian operation is set to launch 19 August, The Australian Financial Review is reporting. The joint venture between Fairfax Media and The Huffington Post, will get up and running with 30 staff, with launch editor-in-chief Tory Maguire, telling the AFR that HuffPost Australia doesn't put Fairfax's audience at risk. “The way people consume their news media has changed enormously. I think this idea that there is a cap on the number of outlets that you can have in a particular market is very outdated,” Maguire said.
Fairfax goes to ACCC over Foxtel's investment in Ten
The AFR is reporting that Fairfax Media has told the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) that Foxtel's proposed acquisition of 15% of Ten Network Holdings will result in control of the broadcaster by Foxtel and News Corporation – and through that control of bidding for premium sports content in Australia.
Seven takes Nine to court over Hotplate show
The Seven and Nine networks will head to court tomorrow amid accusations that Nine’s new series The Hotplate is a rip-off of My Kitchen Rules, The Australian is reporting. Seven has lodged papers in the Federal Court demanding the Nine show be taken off air, with a spokespersons for Seven telling the paper that: “Channel Nine’s on-air promotions for its program had a strange sense of deja vu. We then saw it. We believe Nine has appropriated Seven’s My Kitchen Rules original format and related production elements, and contravened copyright. That’s why we’re in court.”
