Billionaire Elon Musk, the owner of social media microblogging site Twitter, has declared working from home morally wrong.

He thinks members of, what he terms, the laptop class are living in " la-la land".

In an interview with CNBC, Musk argues that people are more productive in person.

"There are some exceptions, but I kinda think the whole notion of work-from-home is a bit like the fake Marie Antoinette quote, 'Let them eat cake'," he said.

"You're going to make people who make your food that gets delivered [that] can't work from home; the people that come fix your house, they cant work from home, but you can?"

"Does that seem morally right? That's messed up."

In the advertising industry in Australia, working from home has settled at around two days a week, with the rest in the office.

Some friction remains with many managers wanted stafff in front of them four days a week. Staff think two days in the office is about right.

The balance of power is shifting back to management as the jobs market goes to lukewarm from red hot but the strength of feeling about the advantages in work flexibility remains.

Omnicom last month told its staff they must be in the office at least three days a week, reversing a work from home trend which started during the depths of the pandemic.

CEO John Wren: “It’s time for them to come back because we’re a creative service company, and we work better when we’re together.”
