Industry push for more advertising students at university

QUT's Five Decades of Advertising Graduates has opened its second competition, aimed to encourage university students to create a TikTok video to persuade high school students to study advertising at university.

"I can think of no better way to celebrate 50 years of advertising education in Australia. than encouraging students to showcase their creativity by displaying what it is like to be an advertising student in 2024," IAB Australia CEO and competition judge Gai Le Roy said.

This project addresses two of the target markets of advertising education – university students and high school students. In this competition, university students studying an advertising major are asked to create a TikTok video to encourage high school students to study advertising.

VML Brisbane has created a video featuring its CCO Paul Nagy to encourage university students to start creating instead of just watching TikTok.

Nagy said it was great fun working with QUT in developing this competition.

"Happy to do anything that will inspire the next generation of creative talent. I can 100% guarantee this career gives you a pretty good chance at travelling the world, standing on the global stage and making work that genuinely changes lives for the better. If you’ve got the talent, we can’t wait to meet you.”

Each state has its own academic lead, connecting with academics at universities with an advertising major, distributing the promotional information and encouraging students to sell what they study.

State lead for Victoria, David Reid from Swinburne University said this is a wonderful national initiative.

"To drive growth and awareness of our high-quality advertising degree education in the next generation across Australia."

Each state winner gets an internship with a leading agency such as VML Brisbane, Innocean Sydney, Cummins&Partners Melbourne, and the Advertising Council Australia’s JumpStart Program in WA.

The National Winner gets a ticket to an IAB industry event, at which their award-winning video is revealed. Plus a career chat with Paul Nagy, Chief Creative Officer at VML.

Entries open now. To be eligible to enter, applicants must be currently studying an advertising major at an Australian university.

Entries close on August 11

The entries are judged by a panel of industry and academics, selecting one winner from each of the states with an Advertising major, plus a national winner.

The winning videos can then be distributed to high schools/teachers in each state to encourage high school students to study advertising at university.

As Professor Gayle Kerr from QUT summed up, “Who knows the experience of studying advertising at university better than our own advertising students?”.
