Jules Hall: CEO of The Hallway

Time in current role/time at the company:

Since the very beginning, back in 2007.

How would you describe what the company does?

The Hallway is a full-service advertising agency (which they say is Australia’s longest running independent advertising agency). We create and grow some of Australia’s most recognised brands.

What do you do day-to-day?

Chief cheerleader.

Every business needs a hustler at its heart. That’s my role: Where are we going? How do we get there quicker? How do we make our product better? How do we deliver it more efficiently? How do we make the journey more fulfilling for everyone involved?

Define your job in one word:

Creating.

I got into marketing because:

I love creating things that people care about. There’s too much vanilla in the world. And too many people accept vanilla because they haven’t imagined what something better could look like.

What’s the biggest challenge you face in your role?

The dynamism of our industry is one of its greatest strengths. Everyone chose this career because of the excitement and variety it offers. Staying on top of all the changes can be challenging!

What’s the biggest industry-wide challenge you’d like to see tackled?

A broader understanding of the value of creativity. As an industry we’ve done a brilliant job of eroding the value. We are on the track to rebuilding it, but there’s a lot to do and a lot of stakeholders we need to educate. Most of them don’t have marketing in their job description.

Who has been a great mentor to you and why?

Miles Joyce. I learned a lot working for Miles back in the NetX days. Now we are incredibly lucky to have him as part of our team at The Hallway.

Words of advice for someone wanting a job like yours?

I would have said do it. But I think every network agency leader has already started an Indie in the last 12 months!

If I wasn't doing this for a living, I'd be:

Sailing.

My mantra is:

Really? I don’t have a mantra!

My favourite advert is:

Guinness ‘Surfer’.

I used to have hair.

Five years older.
