The State of Origin Series is seeking a naming rights brand for 2021 after Holden announced its exit from Australia.
The rights could fetch about $5 million a year. Holden has had the naming rights since 2013 when it outbid Toyota with $10 million over three years.
NRL chief commercial officer Andrew Abdo says he has already started talks with a range of brands.
“It is rare for an opportunity like this to arise, so many of our partnerships are long term," he says.
"This is an attractive proposition to automotive brands because there is a significant fleet vehicle component to our business.
"State of Origin is the biggest sporting brand in the country."
In 2019 the Origin series had a combined live television audience of 8.9 million, providing three of the top four most watched programs in Australia.
The series also sold out of tickets at all three matches in Brisbane, Perth and Sydney, including setting a ground record at Optus Stadium in Perth.
"No matter your metric there is no greater exposure than our Origin series and this is a rare opportunity to begin a new partnership. More than three million people watched the series opener last year, more than any other program in Australia," Abdo says.
He says multiple state governments are talking about wanting to host an Origin match outside of Sydney in Melbourne beyond 2021.
