Hamish and Andy’s return to the airwaves last year was a multimillion dollar deal for Southern Cross Austero. So it might make some in the management team uncomfortable to hear just how little preparation the broadcasting pair put into their shows.

But its this light touch approach that is the secret to their on-air success - it's all about spontaneity.

The pair told the National Radio Conference the secret sauce to their hit radio show is don’t over-prepare.

While the duo didn’t say they don’t prepare at all, they prefer an element of spontaneity to save the “fireworks” for on-air, rather than going over every detail in a production meeting before a show and having everything rehearsed.

They also warned against plotting “big ideas”, preferring to reach their ideas and content more organically by “planting seeds”, which means their shows are more fun.

There’s a constant balance, they say, on how much they share with the producers before the show, and how much they allow the show evolve naturally to keep the broadcasts fluid and fun.

The strategy appears to be working. In the latest radio ratings their show continued to dominate the drive time slot.
