eBay-owned online classifieds site Gumtree has appointed PHD to its media account as it seeks to double its users and ramp up marketing.

PHD has already been working with Gumtree on a project basis and the appointment will formalise the relationship.

Gumtree marketing and PR manager Nat Thomas told AdNews that the site has ambitions to double its unique browsers in the next 12 months. It currently has one million unique browsers a month.

Previously, Gumtree has not had any retained agencies of record but has since reviewed its creative resources as the site continues to grow. Gumtree launched a marketing campaign this month with television, radio and online advertising.

Thomas said: "We are very pleased to be partnering with PHD. PHD demonstrated excellent strategic insights into the classifieds space and showed great understanding of the Gumtree brand its community."

PHD Australia general manager Martin Hadley said: "We are delighted to be partnering with this powerhouse organisation. We intend to collaborate and help make Gumtree a household name, and increase relevance and share across not only the horizontal sites, where Gumtree clearly dominate, but across vertical sites as well."

Gumtree has no creative agency of record and works with a number of undisclosed creative suppliers on a project basis. PHD is also the media agency of record for eBay and eBay-owned PayPal.
