Google has stopped selling ads in Russia, including Search, YouTube, and Display, in response to the invasion of Ukraine.
"In light of the extraordinary circumstances, we're pausing Google ads in Russia," the company said in a statement.
"The situation is evolving quickly, and we will continue to share updates when appropriate."
The Wall Street Journal reported that Russia had demanded Google stop showing video ads it described as “false political information” about Ukraine.
Google last week stopped taking advertising from Russian state media under its Sensitive Event rule that blocks ads related to the conflict that seek to take advantage of the situation.. Meta (Facebook) is also preventing Russian state media ads.
Monetisation of Russian state-funded media across Google platforms has also been paused. This applies to Russian state-funded publisher sites, apps, and YouTube channels, as well as advertisers.
Several high profile media outlets. including CNN, the BBC, Canadian Broadcasting Company and Bloomberg News, have stopped reporting from Russia in response to a new law which threatens jail for spreading "fake" news
