Mel Silva, Google’s Australian managing director, gave birth to her third child the day after being grilled in a Senate inquiry.
She told the inquiry on Friday that Google would pull its search function from Australia if the media bargaining code, designed to force the global digital platforms to pay for news, is passed in its current form.
Silva says the code, which was revealed last month by the federal government, is unworkable and would “break” Google Search and its business in Australia.
The next day she gave birth to a baby boy, Freddy, Google said, confirming a report by the Sydney Morning Herald.
Caroline Rainsford, country head in New Zealand, is acting AuNZ leader while Silva is on maternity leave.
