The series finale of Game of Thrones has once again smashed viewership records for Foxtel's linear platform, with the show drawing in 1.07m viewers overnight.

Game of Thrones' wrapped up its eight series run overnight, ending what has arguably been one of the most internationally viewed programs in a decade.

The show was a winner for Foxtel, with the show averaging over 1m viewers for each of the six episodes in the final season.

Last night's numbers only include the preliminary figures from OzTam and are only reflective of those who watched the show through Foxtel's main linear platform.

The final episode delivered an overnight linear audience across all airings of 1.076 million viewers, the largest overnight audience in subscription TV history.

This also marks an increase of 21% on the season seven finale in 2017 and a 6% increase on the previous record holder, season eight episode three, ‘The Long Night’, which held the record of 1.011 million.

OzTam's video player measurement rating, which reports on viewership through Foxtel's streaming platforms Foxtel Now and Go, has last night's episode sitting at 432,000.

These preliminary numbers would indicate the series finale has drawn close to 1.5m overall viewers across all of Foxtel's platforms.

The VPM rating for the show has once again smashed overnight streaming records, beating the original record set by season eight's first episode.

The Game of Thrones season eight audience has been the most engaged ever for Foxtel, with the show pulling in a cumulative linear average audience of 1.413 million viewers per episode across episodes 1-4.

However, it seems Foxtel may have some concerns over viewer interest in the wake of the show's finale.

In an email obtained by AdNews, Foxtel assures customers that Game of Thrones is not the end to its content slate, offering a three-month promotional discount.

"There is life after Game of Thrones and we want you to have the best experience to keep watching our most loved shows and more," the promotional email reads.

Foxtel goes on to offer Foxtel Now subscribers a three-month free pass to use it's Move Pack, which gives users access to its library of new release and classic movies.
