While free-to-air networks are facing a stagnant to declining revenue pool, peak body Freeview Australia says 2014 was “another outstanding year”, and pointed to bigger things to come from its Freeview and Freeview Plus offerings.
It said that a combined 10.7 million metro viewers watched free-to-air networks this year.
“Against the backdrop of immense change that includes increased competition, shifting viewing habits and new forms of delivery, the Freeview networks have not only maintained audience share and numbers, they have continued to adapt and develop with innovation in free-to-air TV services,” Freeview chief executive Liz Ross said.
The launch of the Freeview Plus offering this year gave viewers access to all the networks' catch-up TV services in one place, with maufaucturers LG and Sony coming on board as launch partners.
However, Freeview has hinted that more names could be on the way in the first half of next year to expand the range of TVs, personal video recorders and set-top boxes which feature the technology.
“We are looking forward to many more manufacturers coming on board in the first half of 2015 who will provide a range of Freeview Plus products,” Ross said.
“The free-to-air industry is in excellent health.
“We're all excited that 2014 has been such a great year and 2015 is shaping up to be even better for Australian viewers.”
