Elon Musk, said to be the world's richest man, has sent a message to Twitter's advertisers, explaining why he is buying the social media platform for $US44 billion.

It's all to help humanity.

“The reason I acquired Twitter is because it is important to the future of civilisation to have a common digital town square, where a wide range of beliefs can be debated in a healthy manner, without resorting to violence.”

And: “That is why I bought Twitter. I didn’t do it because it would be easy. I didn’t do it to make more money. I did it to try to help humanity, whom I love.”

Musk also posted a video of himself at Twitter headquarters in San Francisco. He is carrying a sink with the caption: “Entering Twitter HQ – let that sink in!”

He has also changed his Twitter handle to Chief Twit, but the company is still trading on the stock exchange and apparently hasn't yet been taken private.
