The company-supplied lunch, the mainstay and a key attraction to working in the tech world, has been sunk by billionaire Elon Musk.

The new owner of Twitter, for which he paid $US44 billion, not only wants everyone back in the office, he won't be pay for lunch anymore.

Meals cost the company around $25 per head a day, according to one report. On Musk’s numbers, that adds up to $13 million.

On Twitter, Niche Gamer @nichegamer tweeted: “He fired 3/4 of the employees. Now he’s planning to starve the rest of them. He’s failure incarnate.”

Musk replied: “Especially bizarre given that almost no one came to the office. Estimated cost per lunch served in past 12 months is >$400.”

Musk last week cut by half the company’s 7,500 employees.

Major brands have stopped campaigns on Twitter and global advertising agencies are warning clients of risks associated with the social media platform.

Omnicom memo: “We recommend pausing activity on Twitter in the short term until the platform can prove it has reintroduced safeguards to an acceptable level and has regained control of its environment."
