Australia's first magazine dedicated to the burgeoning unmanned aerial vehicle has taken off, with Drone Magazine set to tap into a global market, which is tipped to rise by 750% in three years.
Yaffa Media (publishers of AdNews) have launched the magazine to tap a market which in the US more than doubled last year, and cuts across kids, hobbyists, business, and government.
While the consumer market is skyrocketing, so is the professional market. At the beginning of 2014 there were 50 certified drone operators in Australia, and by the end of the year there were 180.
The magazine will have both a print and digital edition, along with a website and Facebook page for drone enthusiasts to connect.
It is being headed up by current managing director of Australian Photography + Digital and former commercial pilot James Ostinga. He will be joined by CASA-certified pilots and commercial drone operators Craig Newlyn and Andy Willmott.
Targeted at professionals, amateurs and beginners alike, its content spans all aspects of owning and operating a drone, from how drones work, buyer's guides, product test flights, to even rules and regulations of flight.
Yaffa Media publisher Jeremy Light said it was exciting to be launching a magazine in a growing category.
“This is one of the fastest-moving product categories around, driven by amazing new advances in technology,” Light said.
“Drones are of enormous interest to young men in particular, with many custom-building their own models and experiemnting with new uses. This publication is for all drone enthusiasts, however, and we think they'll find lots of uses for it.”
