A new ad that is sure to stir up some controversy questions why the Queen is Australia’s head of state.

The 50-second spot, by McCann Melbourne, features everyday Australians singing the words to the British national anthem, God Save the Queen.

It finishes with the text: “It doesn’t sound right anymore”.

It has been released by the Australian Republic Movement (ARM) in time for Australia Day.

The campaign aims to invite Australians to be independent and pledge allegiance to their own country rather than the British monarch.

ARM's Peter FitzSimons says: “"This is Australia. We are Australians. And our national head of state should be an Australian. There's no credible argument against that.

"We respect the Queen for her lifetime of service, and we'd love to have her over for a cuppa to oversee the transition to an Australian republic with an Australian as our head of state."

The ARM has also released a new logo for the group with a new yellow Australia created in the shape of a forward-facing arrow.

McCann Melbourne currently works with the Australian Republic Movement.
