Digital radio listening has increased in the first radio survey of the year with 3.2 million people using DAB+ devices, according to GfK figures released by Commercial Radio Australia (CRA).

The figures also found that 24.2% of people in the five state capitals where DAB+ is available are listening to radio on a DAB+ digital radio device.

This compares to figures from DAB+ in October which found listening levels were at 21.4% or 2.8 million people.

GfK also found that 1.5 million more people listen to radio on a DAB+ device rather than streaming and that when using DAB+ they listen twice as long.

CRA CEO Joan Warner said the growth shows the investment the industry is putting into digital broadcast.

“Australian radio listeners continue to support DAB+ digital broadcast radio,” Warner said.

“The industry has invested in a robust, reliable future technology that is easy for listeners to access, is free, live and local with high quality content.”

Australia now has 21 vehicle manufacturers in Australia which include DAB+ digital radio, with Jeep joining as the latest to add the system as standard or an option in the Grand Cherokee and Cherokee models. DAB+ has also been expanded to be included on a range of boats.
