Not even a bunch of dancing celebrities could knock The Block off its perch, although it did help Channel 7 to a win over Channel Nine even if it was down on last year's figures.

According to the overnight OzTAM ratings, 1.04 million people in metro areas tuned into the season premiere of the latest series of the dancing behemoth, which is now in its 14th season on Australian screens.

The latest season premiere is down about about 20% from last year's premiere figure of 1.3 million, which also premiered on a Tuesday night.

However, it wasn't enough to knock off The Block off, with it again winning the night with 1.184 million viewers in metro areas.

Demonstrating the broad appeal of the DIY/reality/soap opera show, it pulled off first place in the 16-39, 18-49 and 25-54 demographics.

While Nine's Big Brother took home the second-most watched show in the 16-39 and 18-45 demographics, it could only reach number 14 for the most watched-shows overnight.

Channel Ten also managed to sneak into the top five for 16-39 with Family Feud and The Project taking spots four and five.

Overall, Seven won the night with a 33.5% share accross its channels over Nine on a 28.9% share.

Seven got a 10.2% boost from 7Two and 7Mate while Nine got an 8.8% fillup from GO! And Gem.

Channel Ten took home an 18.1% share while the ABC got 15.4 points for the evening.
