Coca-Cola has kicked off the eBay auction for its historic Kings Cross billboard.
So far the bids are up to some $2000 for individual letters, with all the profits going to local charity The Wayside Chapel. The charity helps the most marginalised members of the community have access to essential health, welfare, social and recreational services.
Coke indicated its intentions to sell off the letters from its old sign late last month, with the iconic billboard preparing to get a facelift.
All eight letters of the 42-year-old sign are up for grabs, and bidders are able to put their hands up for individual letters or they can put their hands in their pockets for the whole set.
However the winning bidder will want to have a large wall handy, because the two largest letters of the sign, the C's, are said to be more than 5.4m tall, up to 6.6m wide, 29cm deep and weigh 65kg each.
The smaller letters are around 2.8m tall, between 1.2m and 2.6m wide, 29cm deep and weigh between 25kg and 40kg.
Bidding for each of the letters started at $100 and the auction will run for five days until 8pm on 12 September.
Coke isn't giving any expectations around how much the letters are tipped to sell for, however according to eBay, more than $2 million worth of Coke memorabilia has sold on ebay.com.au in the last two years alone.
Some of the most expensive Coke related items sold on eBay include:
• A restored 1950s vending machine sold for $5800
• A crate full of 1980s 1 litre Coke bottles sold for $5190
• A complete set 1958-1984 of Australian Coca Cola yo-yo’s sold for $4550
