Cinema is continuing its golden run, with Standard Media Index (SMI) figures for April revealing strong growth in ad spend for the medium.

SMI figures measure paid media spend from agency bookings.

Cinema attracted almost $6.9m of media spend throughout April in comparison to $5.6m in April 2014 which is growth of 22.1%. Year to date, cinema has also seen a boost of 29.1%, with $25.2m in spend between Jan to April 2015 compared to $19.5m in the corresponding period in 2014.

This compares to a financial year to date figure – collating spend between July 2014 and April 2015 – of $56.4m compares to $61.2m in the financial year to date period, a drop of 7.8%, largely attributed to a slower end of 2014 spend.

Overall the paid media market saw a 1.4% boost in April, with $559.1m in spend compared to $551.5m in the same month last year, off the back of solid growth in media including outdoor and radio.

Outdoor recorded growth of 6.3% with $56.0m in spend over the month compared to $52.7m the previous year. Year to date growth was 14.8% to $235.6m, compared to $205.3m in the previous year.

Radio saw a boost of 9.2% to $42.9m in April 2015, compared to $39.3m in the previous year. Calender year-to-date, radio grew by 10.5% to $181.5m, from $164.2m in the previous period last year.

Television saw slight growth over April, recording an increase of 1.4%, while newspapers and magazines saw drops of 15.4% and 20.3% respectively.
