The biggest immediate media talking point from the federal was the bringing forward of previously announced personal income tax cuts.
Analysis by Streem realtime media monitoring found tax cuts were the most mentioned element of the budget in all media types, and across metropolitan and regional media, to 9am on Wednesday.
“It was the second year in a row the government's income tax cut plan has dominated post-budget coverage, after also being the number-one media talking point in May 2019,” says Streem media analyst Conal Hanna.
Other topics generating high media volumes this year were infrastructure spending and the deficit of $213.7 billion.
Hanna says the deficit was particularly prominent in coverage on Australia’s biggest news websites.
“Tax cuts and the deficit were by far the two highest-profile elements of Budget coverage online, followed by the new JobMaker hiring credit, and the Budget’s assumptions around a COVID-19 vaccine being available late next year," he says.
Despite costing nearly $27 billion over the forward estimates, the instant asset write-off generated significantly less coverage than other cheaper budget measures.
Meanwhile, topics of higher interest to regional media included road spending, pensioners, housing and manufacturing.
