Auckland-based media agency D3's office blends historical industrial design with modern functionality, creating a workspace that feels inspiring and authentic.

Located in the city's old workshops, amongst eateries, bars, shops and other businesses, the City Works Depot was initially developed in 1968 used to house the city's maintenance and infrastructure departments.

The newly restored office embraces historical architectural elements, including a tilted glass roof, steel walls, and robust steel girders and columns.

The design was a collaborative effort between the D3 team and celebrated local designer Philly Lyus who ensured the agency's culture, values and goals were embedded in the office.

Creating a space that truly reflects who we are, D3 co-founder and partner Alex Radford told AdNews.

"The design is both modern and functional, strongly emphasising creating an environment that fosters collaboration. innovation and fun," Radford said.

The office supports a hybrid work style, accommodating for both focus and collaboration.

With technology-enabled meeting rooms to ensure seamless communication between in-office and remote team members.

There's a mix of open-plan areas and more secluded spots to cater to different work styles and preferences.

Features like meeting pods, quiet zones, and purpose-built breakout areas make it easy to adapt to different work schedules and tasks.

The office is designed to support both concentrated work and spontaneous collaboration, with areas for team meetings, brainstorming sessions, and casual catch-ups.

"We aimed to create a dynamic environment that balances work and play, with dedicated focus areas, breakout spaces for informal discussions, collaboration zones, and spaces designed specifically for relaxation and socialising."

The agency currently has 25 staff with everyone having a dedicated spot.

The desks are organised to maximise natural light and encourage interaction while still providing enough space for individual work.

Each team member has a personal space that reflects their work style, allowing them to feel settled and focused throughout the day.

The staff favourite spot is undoubtedly the family-style dining table, which serves as a central hub for the team.

"It’s a place where we come together for meals, discussions, celebrations, and even the latest sporting events on the nearby TV.

"This communal area embodies the spirit of D3—collaborative, social, and dynamic."
