The 2013/2014 Drama Report released by Screen Australia has revealed that the state of Australian production has strengthened since the release of the last report, with an added boost from Hollywood.
The study showed that Australian production hit a record expenditure of $837 million.
The report noted that Australian feature film production is in a healthy position with production of films increasing from last year by 18%.
State-based production activity in NSW, Queensland and Victoria is high with South Australian activity increasing by 9% to hold its largest share of production ever.
Graeme Mason, CEO of Screen Australia, said “Healthy domestic production levels continued with local TV and feature films accounting for over 76% of the overall drama production expenditure in 2013/14 – a substantial $640 million. It has been a solid year for local features recording the strongest result in five years. And we are continuing to turn out the high-quality TV drama that audiences have come to love and expect.”
Foreign production has also boosted expenditure with Angelina Jolie’s Unbroken and San Andreas featuring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson both being filmed in Australia’s film-friendly environment.
Australian productions that will soon hit our screens include Russel Crowe’s directorial debut film The Water Diviner and Gods of Egypt, which will be shot at Fox Studios in Sydney - as well as television series The Code, Banished and returning seasons of Mako Mermaid and Love Child.
