Amazon announced a $US8.35 billion deal to acquire Hollywood's MGM, a move to strengthen the content position of its Prime Video against other streaming platforms including Netflix and Disney.

Metro Goldwyn Mayer has a library of 4,000 movies, including 12 Angry Men, Basic Instinct, Creed, James Bond, Legally Blonde, Moonstruck, Poltergeist, Raging Bull, Robocop, Rocky, Silence of the Lambs, Stargate, Thelma & Louise, Tomb Raider, The Magnificent Seven, The Pink Panther and The Thomas Crown Affair.

Also coming are House of Gucci, James Bond's No Time to Die, Respect, The Addams Family 2, and an untitled Paul Thomas Anderson film.

Its catalog also includes 17,000 TV shows, including The Handmaid’s Tale, Fargo and Vikings.

Mike Hopkins, senior vice president of Prime Video and Amazon Studios: “The real financial value behind this deal is the treasure trove of IP in the deep catalog that we plan to reimagine and develop together with MGM’s talented team.”

Amazon’s move gives it a guaranteed stream of original content against other streaming players, including Netflix and Disney.

Many of the studios are keeping their own content for home grown services including WarnerMedia’s HBO Max.
