Brisbane Airport has rejected a billboard encouraging action on climate change ahead of the G20 summit on account of it being a “political issue.”
The #OnMyAgenda campaign, developed by digital agency Circul8, for nine national and international organisations, encourages people to tweet G20 leaders and ask them to include climate change as a standalone item on the summit's agenda.
As part of its campaign, the groups sought to place a billboard in the airport’s arrival hall ahead of the G20 leaders meeting from 15-16 November.
The billboard shows a farmer with the words “Action on climate change is #OnMyAgenda, Dear G20 leaders please put it on yours”.
Climate change was a discussion point on the previous eight G20 summits but is not slated for inclusion this time.
However Brisbane Airport has rejected one of the billboards on account of it being a “political issue.”
It's not the first time this year a billboard has been the subject of discussion with a Melbourne advert against horse racing and a 'free Palestine' billboard gaining attention for showing controversial political statements.
Outdoor Media Association CEO Charmaine Moldrich told AdNews that more advertisers are seeing outdoor as an effective mass media to broadcast political messages.
“Political advertising seems to be on the up and up. What we're witnessing at the moment is a lot more people seeing the power of outdoor advertising as a way of getting a particular message across to the public,” Moldrich said.
Despite the ban, #OnMyAgenda campaign launched yesterday with another billboard unveiled near the Brisbane Convention Centre, where the G20 is being held.
The campaign's nine official partners are Oxfam, Greenpeace, 350.Org, WWF, Earth Hour, GetUp!, the Australian Conservation Foundation, the Australian Youth Climate Coalition and 1 Million Women.
The outdoor push will be supported by a social activity and a dedicated website.
