The AFL has partnered with creator economy agency Amplify to produce The Slice, a vodcast that dives into all things football, pop culture and life.
The weekly vodcast, airing on the AFL Play YouTube channel, is hosted by content creator Starr McGowan and AFL media personality Connor Rogers.
While centred around Australian Rules football, no topics are off the table for the youth-aimed series. The duo will discuss everything from sport to the struggles of high school, to keeping up with daily demands and juggling life as a teenager.
Amplify has been engaged by the AFL’s Game Development Team to manage the overall production of their first youth focused vodcast, including talent management, content and art direction, video and audio outputs and the social media strategy.
Michelle Melky, creative director of Amplify, says the strategy to produce The Slice was to select talent, topics and a platform that engages with a youth audience and drives their passion for the AFL.
“Vodcasting is an exciting medium for brands," she said.
"This dynamic form of content creates an opportunity for brands to showcase their personality, tell compelling stories and establish a connection with viewers. The Slice is an example of how it can be a powerful engagement tool to engage with a fresh audience across multiple platforms.
“We’ve loved partnering with the AFL to produce The Slice. To be part of a meaningful contribution to the AFL community is really exciting and we look forward to seeing how the content and show evolves and grows with the audience.”
The Slice is the first vodcast to be launched on AFL Play, a new platform launched by the AFL to reach a youth focused audience. The Slice aims to engage with audiences using a range of segments that are interchangeable from week to week depending on the feedback and weekly trends from viewers.
Rob Auld, EGM of game development at the AFL, said launching The Slice is a significant milestone for PLAY, the new brand of the AFL.
"We are passionate about connecting with new audiences, and also making sure footy plays a role in every home across the Country," he said.
"The Slice gives us an exciting new way to connect with people who love the game, but also those who are new to footy and want to be a part of it”
A new episode of The Slice will be released every Wednesday at 6:30pm on the AFL Play YouTube channel, and as a podcast.
