Independent creative Adrian Elton, well known for his manipulation of reality, is at it again, this time with a fake hack of digital billboards displaying Barbeques Galore.

He pushed out four images of billboards on Twitter using the handle @TheSurrealMcCoy, with the words: Almost as many Cookers as the Liberal Party.

Elton wrote, tongue in cheek: “Love it when a brand takes a stand!”

“Spotted all over Melbourne this morning.

“Of course, as they're digital billboards it's hard to know whether or not the system was hacked? But if they're legit, BBQs Galore deserves a mighty salute!”

Later, Elton came clean in a tweet: "Like ‘The Cat In The Hat’ that cleans up the house after he’s had his fun, I just wanted to confess, that I indeed done did it. 100% apologies to #barbequesgalore - hope you didn’t have to deal with any irate cookers!"

At last report, the social media post had attracted 4,800 likes and more than 190 comments.

One referred to Elton’s 2019 Ikea project, taking aim at Clive Palmer’s United Australia Party (UAP) which failed to gain a single seat in parliament despite an estimated $60 million in advertising.

Elton earlier this year caused a stir with a fake political ad campaign. His target was Josh Frydenberg, the federal treasurer who was standing (and failed) for re-election to the seat of Kooyong in Melbourne.

The Keep Josh billboards were, via digital manipulation, in response to a strong campaign by independent candidate Dr Monique Ryan.

Elton’s images had the words: "Please let me keep my job. Not Joshing.”
