Adrian Elton, the man behind the viral Clive Palmer Ikea ad, has put out a second and final installment of his "informal pitch" for Ikea's creative account via LinkedIn.
In the post, Elton quotes Whitney Houston “Didn’t we almost have it all”, upon hearing that Ikea has chosen someone else for its creative account.
For the final pitch, Elton went into the Swedish furniture store and bought a Snille chair. Photographer Lynton Crabb shot the humorous image of the chair and Elton at Brighton Beach as Elton bid goodbye to winning the account.
The post follows on from Elton's first "pitch" post via LinkedIn upon hearing that the Ikea creative account was up for grabs. Despite not being invited to pitch, Elton put out the informal pitch on the social media platform and received more than 500 likes and 69 comments.
"I’m always thinking up unbriefed campaigns. Sometimes they’re tongue in cheek spoof ads - and sometimes they’re solid ideas that could totally work as real world campaigns - notwithstanding how they might or might not align with the brand’s internal strategies," Elton told AdNews.
He says this would be his last "Ikea gag" but he has had his eyes set on another brand for while.
"I’ve got a two part TVC campaign for Cadbury Flake that’s ready to go. Shot it a few years ago for the hell of it," Elton says.
"Two TVCs shot by a proper cinematographer and directed by a proper feature film director. Never seen the light of day. Waiting for the right moment to hopefully get in front of Cadbury."
Elton's initial mock Clive Palmer Ikea ad went viral following the election when Palmer's United Australia Party (UAP) won zero seats despite spending $60 million on advertising.
The ad read: “Geez Clive… $60 million dollars and not a single seat?” on a billboard appearing to advertise one of Ikea’s chairs.
It went viral on Twitter after the election results were announced, receiving nods from politicians including new Labor leader Athony Albanese and One Nation leader Pauline Hanson.
Adrian Elton will be speaking at the AdNews Summit in Melbourne on 8 August.
