Scammers scraped an image of WPP's CEO Mark Read from the internet, added his voice using AI and setup a meeting via Microsoft Teams with a senior executive at the world's largest advertising group.
The voice clone wanted the agency leader to establish a new business. This entity, of course, would need funds to get started.
“Thanks to the vigilance of our people, including the executive concerned, the incident was prevented," said a WPP spokesperson.
The scam was revealed in a confidential internal email at WPP, according to The Guardian.
