Holy Pikachu, its Pokémon.
Pokémon is the first brand to roll out a full 2016 Super Bowl commercial, releasing an extended version of its spot that will run in a 30-second version at the big game.
This is the first year Pokémon is featuring at the Super Bowl, airing the commercial in celebration of its 20th anniversary.
In the clip, by creative agency Omelet LA, director Rio de Janeiro plays with the idea that Pokémon inspires kids that they can do anything. It shows children saying, “I can do that,” including a young footballer who conquers the game.
He is followed by another male who enters the Pokémon battle arena to go head-to-head with Charmander and other Pokémon animations. The ad finishes with a boy and his dad sitting in their living room with Pikachu – as you do.
The 30-second version will run near the beginning of the third quarter of Super Bowl 50.
Releasing teasers to Super Bowl ads has become an effective strategy from brands, gaining viral status before the game even starts. It's a move Meat and Livestock Australia also made, releasing an Australia Day teaser ahead of the national holiday.
