The Australian Defence Force has launched a new campaign that celebrates Indigenous female role models and personnel in the armed forces for NAIDOC Week.
The campaign, 'Because of Her, We Can', is a collaboration between Defence Force Recruiting and Dentsu Aegis Network agencies Cox Inall Change and The Story Lab.
It is a series of online videos that provide real life insights into the Indigenous development programs on offer from the perspective of recruits in the Navy, Army and Air Force.
There’s Cheryl Neal an Air Force wing commander and descendant of the Darug People, as well as Apy Lands Army recruit Jeffrey and Murrawarri Man Navy recruit Malik.
Neal speaks about trailblazing Indigenous women who served in the Air Force before her and inspired her path, while the two men pay homage to the support of their mothers and grandmothers in helping them forge a career in the armed forces.
“By sharing the stories of success and achievement through these Indigenous recruits, we hope to inspire the next generation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women to consider the opportunities available them in the Australian Defence Force,” said Air Commodore Sue McGready, who is also the director general of Defence Force Recruiting.
Rose Damon, producer at The Story Lab, added: “It was exciting to see these young people grow from uncertain new recruits to confident graduates beginning their careers, and I hope the next generation of recruits and their families will be similarly excited by what they can achieve.”
